Croatia has it all in terms of geography: mountains, beaches, plains and rolling hills. They also have a rich history, ancient ruins and islands that you can easily plan to visit as day trips on your vacation. No matter what else you choose, here are the five top things to see in Croatia.
Dalmatian Coast – The Croatian coast is rocky, so you won’t be finding white sand beaches on your vacation. However, if you buy your self a pair of rubber shoes to avoid the pesky sea urchins, you’ll be delighted by a swim in the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea. Despite being right across from the coast of Italy, the water along the Croatian coastline is known to be more clean and picturesque. Grab a snorkel and discover the vast sea life that lives out in the deep blue.
Diocletian’s Palace – The Roman Emperor Diocletian occupied what is now one of Croatia’s most popular cities and ports—Split. Split is not recommended as a place to stay (due to the busy, city-like atmosphere) but certainly to visit. The city is towered over by mountains in the background, and old antique buildings in the city. Visit the Roman ruins of Diocletian’s Palace, which has marble streets and is open to the public to peruse 24 hours a day.
Green Cave – A very popularly photographed caved is called the Green Cave, located on the south side of Vis on the islet Ravnik. You can get there by any type of small boat and can even go inside. Inside the cave, you can still get some sunlight from a large opening at the top of the cave. Streams of sunlight and the blue sea make this a beautiful expedition, especially if you’re considering scuba diving.
The Cathedral of St. James – This Catholic church is built entirely of limestone and marble from the nearby island of Brac. The sculptures of St. James, St. Mark and St. Michael and carved into the building. Inside the cathedral you’ll even find a sarcophagus of the bishop Juraj Šižgorič amongst many statues, paintings and elaborate adornments throughout.
Plitvicka Jezera National Park – One of the most beautiful national parks in the world, Plitvicka Jezera National Park is a woodsy paradise. Set in the middle of three mountains, this national park has an abundance of turquoise-colored lakes, caves and waterfalls.
